P4C Residential, Alnmouth Friary 2012

I'm very pleased to confirm dates for the next P4C residential at Alnmouth Friary, Northumberland from 30th January to 3rd February 2012. As in past years, the emphasis will be on reflection, improving practice, networking and making good use of Alnmouth's beach, cafes and pubs!

There will be a study tour for people new to P4C. This will run from 4pm Monday to 4pm Friday and will include visits to local schools, a demonstration P4C lesson, and the P4C Level 1 course (see below)

P4C Level 1 course

On Tues 31st Jan and Weds 1 Feb, there will be a P4C Level 1 course, accredited by Sapere. All participants in the study tour will take part in this course but other people are welcome to join just for the 2 days. The course will be facilitated by James Nottingham and Martin Renton, and will cover:

  • What is Philosophy for Children?
  • How can we use the Community of Enquiry in the classroom?
  • What strategies support the Community of Enquiry?
  • What are the best resources to stimulate enquiry and dialogue?
  • How does P4C fit within the curriculum?

P4C Level 2 course

This course, again accredited by Sapere, is for anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of P4C and/or to take on a coaching role in their school. It will be co-facilitated by James Nottingham and Will Ord, and will cover:

  • Enhancing facilitation skills
  • Using Socratic techniques to improve learning
  • How P4C can help develop critical and creative thinking (including formal and informal reasoning, and the role of imagination)
  • How P4C can help contribute to emotional and social development
  • Evaluating progression within P4C

Places are strictly limited to 20 people on the study tour (including P4C Level 1 course) and 12 people on the Level 2 course.

Costs

  • P4C Level 1 course - UKP 250 course only
  • Study Tour - UKP 300 plus accommodation and food in one of Alnmouth's B&B's
  • P4C Level 2 course - UKP 750 inclusive of accommodation at Alnmouth Friary, and most meals
